A stunning and dramatic cloud formation appeared over Morro Rock in Morro Bay California. The swirling illuminated clouds backlit from the low early evening sunlight resembled a wild bird. I thought about the mythical phoenix or maybe an eagle! It proved to be a very difficult scene to capture with a hand held camera. The backlighting was very strong which made the foreground very dark. The natural colors of blues and gray didn't convey the incredible drama of the sky, so I made a sepia tone version of the photo which I think conveys the luminous quality better. The clouds are exactly as they appeared and were not altered.
